Belize Island Vacations & Activities
Many will tell you that no one visits Belize once. This is because there are so many thing to do and see in Belize. In addition to the island life, the Belize mainland hold tropical rainforest, Mayan ruins, rivers to explore and much more. The Caribbean sea holds just as much adventure with everything from diving and Manatee Watching to Fly fishing and Sailing. Below is just some of the recommended day trips that you can take from Island Vacations in Belize
SCUBA & Snorkeling
At 185 miles in length with over 200 cayes (small islands), the Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest in the world after the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. Snorkeling and scuba diving here is truly spectacular, there are over 460 species of fish that one might see. Belize is the premiere diving destination in the world. UNESCO has named Belize's barrier reef a World Heritage Site.
Fishing & Sport Fishing
Fishing is great all along the coast of Belize, from the Port Honduras and Punta Icacos lagoon of Toledo to Rocky Point on Ambergris Caye. Any of the many rivers which empty into the Caribbean along Belize's coasts can guarantee a daily catch.
Cave Tubing & Rafting
Enjoy a cool splash in a undisturbed, unpolluted spring and rain fed waterway which punched a cavernous cave system through the hills of the Sibun Range during the early cretaceous period - over 100 million years ago! But there is more to this system than meets the eye. Island Vacations highly cave tubing for family activities!
Kayaking
Sea kayaking in Belize has grown into a major sport activity. The environment is perfect for these small, individual craft, whether it is for a self-supported, extended sea kayak trip or for day excursions out of a private island. The shallow waters inside the Belize Barrier Reef are usually quiet and contain no strong tidal currents, and the swells of the open sea are stopped by the long reef offshore. The remote, offshore atolls also have excellent kayaking opportunities.
Surfing
Board surfing is great for beginning to advanced surfers depending on the area. Some areas break on a reef of broken coral rubble, not sand. Since beginners often fall, this could result in a serious injury. Reefs are not recommended for beginners. However, beginners with good athletic ability and some experience may be able to get small rides on surf if conditions permit.
Windsurfing
Eric Stanford from Windsurfing Magazine said it best ... "Anyone can go to a place like Maui or Aruba, where the conditions are always perfect, but traveling to a place with an unknown breeze is like investing in Amazon.com rather than IBM. If you go to Aruba and the wind doesn't blow, you're bummed. You go to Belize and it blows; you're stoked. And guess what, it blows there. Amazon just tripled!... if it doesn't blow, the snorkeling, diving, fishing and kayak tours are world class."
Kiteboarding
We encourage kiteboarders to bring down their gear and enjoy surfing the wide open spaces. In areas there is an average of at least a 10 mph breeze 95% of the time, and above 20 mph about 50% of the time during the winter and spring seasons.
Whitewater Kayaking
The run down the Mopan consists of 5 miles of the river near the Mayan ruins of Xunantunich, which we tour the same day. The river's warm, 70 degree water is a beautiful clear green color and the channel is surrounded by huge trees teeming with parrots and iguanas. The unique rapids we encounter are created by the limestone based travertine deposited by the water, which creates small falls and chutes through islands of vegetation.
Caving
Belize is internationally recognized as home of some of the premier caves in the world. Lost world cave systems are primarily found in limestone regions. In fact, all major cave systems in the world are in limestone, or karst, regions. Other cave formations are created by the sea, rivers, lava flows and springs
Hiking
There are some fantastic hiking trails in Belize, although most of the hiking available is actually on the way to another activity, such as a Mayan ruin or Mayan ceremonial cave. Most of the maintained trails are in the jungle, and a competent guide should point out the local plants and their medicinal uses, as well as jungle birds and animals.
Mayan Ruins
Belize encompasses an important part of the ancient world of the Mayan civilization, which rose to its peak between 600 - 900 AD. The Mayan region was divided into many kingdoms and principalities, and although the people employed a common language and religion these kingdoms had a long history of varying relations among each other over the centuries. Warfare and peace, prosperity and famine, commerce and recession, all these were part of the Mayan world.
Rain Forest / Eco Tours
Belize's natural environment is perhaps its most precious resource. Each district contains several protected areas which enable scientists of all disciplines and visitors who love the outdoors to walk through the flora and witness the fauna firsthand.
River Tours
Photographers wil be busy snapping digital images of the active beauty on the lush green riverbank. Large orange iguanas, grey, and black lizards, howler monkeys, and tropical birds lazing and feeding on the branches of the trees and shrubbery. You may even see turtles or a crocodile sunning on a downed tree.
Bird Watching
With an abundance of over 500 species of birds, Belize is quickly becoming a favorite Central America spot among birders and nature lovers.
Canoeing
The environment is perfect for canoeing. The shallow waters and rivers inside the Belize Barrier Reef are usually quiet and contain no strong tidal currents, and the swells of the open sea are stopped by the long reef offshore.
Horseback Riding
A hands on experience of interacting with horses can be yours in Belize. Most horseback riding tours are done as stays, but day trips can be arranged.
